Hokusai and Hiroshige —A Showdown at the Summit of Spectacular Views—

This exhibition commemorates the 70th anniversary of Izumi City’s incorporation, showcasing works by two of the most representative ukiyo-e artists—Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige—both especially renowned for their landscape prints, selected from the museum’s collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Titled “Spectacular Views: A Showdown at the Summit,” the exhibition highlights the achievements of these two masters. Hokusai, approximately 40 years older than Hiroshige, began producing works themed around the Tōkaidō earlier than his counterpart. His deep interest in landscape painting culminated in his masterpiece, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Around the same time that Hokusai was working on this series, Hiroshige published The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō—the work that brought him international recognition—through the publisher Hoeidō. Focusing primarily on these iconic series—Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and the Hoeidō edition of The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō—this exhibition explores the unique appeal of landscape art as expressed by both Hokusai and Hiroshige.
